Independence looks different for everyone
For one person, it might mean living alone in the home they love. For another, it might mean living with disability and having the freedom to make their own choices.
It might mean continuing to get out and about with a walking stick, managing daily medication, working on a farm, or choosing to age in place within a familiar community.
There is no single definition of what it means to live independently.
And that’s something worth celebrating.
Independence is about choice
We often talk about independence as though it means being able to do everything on your own. But perhaps independence is something much broader than that.
It can mean having control over your own life. Choosing where you live. Deciding how you spend your day. Continuing to work, socialise, travel, exercise or participate in your community. Maintaining the routines that are important to you.
And, importantly, being able to accept support when you need it — without that support taking away your independence.
For some people, independence means living completely alone. For others, it means having the right support around them so they can continue living life on their own terms. Both are independence.
There isn’t one version of an independent life
Consider the very different lives people lead.

Their lives look completely different. Their needs are different. Their routines are different.
But they share something important: they want to live their lives with as much independence as possible.
Independence and safety can exist together
One of the things we believe is important in the conversation about independent living is that safety shouldn’t have to come at the expense of freedom.
Sometimes families worry about someone they love living alone. What if they fall? What if they become unwell? What if something unexpected happens and nobody knows?
Those concerns are real. But the answer doesn’t always need to be taking independence away. Sometimes, it’s about finding simple ways to add an extra layer of reassurance while allowing people to continue living the way they choose.
